Bugle calls and marches

Below you will find my budding collection of bugle calls and marches.  This is an ongoing project.  If you have any printed or recorded bugle calls you would like to add to this collection (which will remain available to all buglers free of charge), please send them to me.  I would love to post them here.

This is a work in progress (which has already grown much larger than I anticipated).  I realize there are many errors and omissions.  Feel free to contribute.

While the vast majority of tunes are written in proper staff notation, some tunes are written in what I've termed "bugle clef".  I find it easiest to quickly write out a tune using a single staff line as such:

Bugle Clef

Abbreviations: A Army USA, AA Artillery USA, AAL Australian Air League, BI British Infantry and Mounted Infantry, BMC British Mounted Corps, BSA Boy Scouts of America, C Cavalry USA, CH Coach Horn, DBC Deutcher Bracken-Club, E Emergency, EP English Post (postal service), I Infantry USA, N Navy USA, PLI Prussian Light Infantry, R Routine, RAN Royal Australian Navy, RCS Revenue Cutter Service, SH Swiss Hunting Calls, USMC United States Marine Corps.

In order to add more functionality, I am converting this page to be generated from a database, rather than simply listing all the tunes available.

Charge X CI Keeping the horses straight, charge as directed: The charge in line is executed by the squadron when in line; it should be as short as possible, so as to arrive in good order, and without fatiguing the horses. The charge in column is executed by the squadron broken with distance. To execute the charge as foragers, all the troopers of the squadron disperse, and direct themselves each upon the point he wishes to attack, observing not to lose sight of their officers, who charge with them. The squadron being in line, the first captain orders the sabres to be drawn, and the platoons to charge one after another, commencing by the right. For this purpose the first Captain advances 240 paces to the front, taking a trumpeter with him; and when he wishes the movement to commence, he causes a signal to be given. The platoon moves forward at the command of its chief, as prescribed, No. 569. It passes successively from the walk to the trot, and from the trot to the gallop, and from the gallop to the charge. Degüello, El See "Carga ó Deguello". El Degüello is a bugle call of Moorish origin notable in its use by the Mexican Army during the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. According to James A. Michener's book Texas, the original meaning of the Degüello call was an appeal to an enemy to surrender or else they would die by the sword. General Antonio López de Santa Anna of the Mexican Army used it to signify that no quarter would be given to the enemy. According to various English-Spanish dictionaries, El Degüello means no mercy. The literal translation is slit-throat. Michener's book translates it as The Beheading. Discuss

Evening Colors 120 N R Routine—this call (also known as Retreat) is sounded by the Bugler at sundown each evening during the flag-lowering ceremony at all naval stations, marine barracks, naval or marine camps, and aboard ship. Prior to the beginning of the ceremony, Attention is sounded by the Bugler. After a short pause he sounds Evening Colors. The flag leaves the peak or truck at the first note of the call and is lowered at a speed which will bring it to the arms of the flag guard with the last note of the call. Upon completion of Evening Colors the Bugler sounds Carry On. When a band is present at the ceremony the procedure described above is followed, except that the flag is lowered while the band plays the national anthem. Retreat (Evening Colors) X 96 Signals the end of the official day. The bugle call sounded at retreat was first used in the French Army and dates back to the crusades. When you hear it, you are listening to a beautiful melody that has come to symbolize the finest qualities of the soldiers of nearly 900 years. Retreat has always been at sunset and its purpose was to notify the sentries to start challenging until sunrise, and to tell the rank and file to go to their quarters and stay there. In our times the ceremony remains as a tradition. When you are outdoors and hear retreat played, you face toward the flag if you can see it and stand at parade rest. If the flag is not within sight. then face toward the music. Discuss

Sound Off Quick Discuss
Sound Off Sound off is the trooping of the line done by the band during a military parade or review. The Sound off is a three-chord (tonic, dominant seventh, tonic) cadence that precedes and follows the march played for the Sound Off sequence. The preceding Sound Off chord cadence is played in the same key as the beginning of the music. The second Sound Off chord cadence is played in the key of the music at the time of the cut off. Because of the bugle's limitations, it is not possible for them to render the Sound Off using the harmonic progression of which a military band is capable. Accordingly, the bugle is limited to a single-note progression (see the Unison Sound Off notated below). The harmonic progression can be used with multiple bugles. Discuss

Taps 50 N R this beautiful and well-known call was written by General Daniel Butterfield and his brigade Bugler in July, 1862 to replace a previous, less melodious call. It is the last call to be sounded at night, with the exception of emergency calls, and is the signal for the men to turn in and extinguish unauthorized lights. Taps is also sounded at the funeral of a member or ex-member of the armed services as the final military tribute to the service which that man has rendered to his country. When a Bugler is to take part in a funeral service ashore he accompanies the firing party to the place of internment. Upon completion of the commitment service, the commander of the escort gives the command PRESENT ARMS. On this command, the bugler moves to the head of, and facing, the grave. When he has taken his position, he gives the hand salute without further command. At the command FIRE THREE VOLLEYS the firing party fires three volleys of blank cartridges and assumes the position of READY. Immediately following the last volley, the Bugler sounds Taps. Upon completion of the call, he again gives the hand salute, faces about, and rejoins his unit. If for any reason the volleys are omitted from the ceremony, the Bugler follows the procedure described above, but sounds Taps immediately after moving to the head of the grave and giving the hand salute. For burials at sea the Bugler falls in with the firing party. When the order “All hands bury the dead” is given, Officer’s Call is sounded on the bugle. When the crew has assembled, Adjutant’s Call is sounded and all divisions face the body. With the vessel hove to and the colors at half-mast the divisions are brought to Parade Rest for the reading of the scripture and for prayer. Upon conclusion of the prayers all divisions are brought to attention for the committal service by sounding Attention on the bugle. After the committal, three volleys are fired by the firing party, and the Bugler sounds Taps. Following this, benediction is said the colors are two-blocked. Retreat is sounded on the bugle to bring the ceremony to its close. Manual for Buglers U.S. Navy 1953 Discuss

Tattoo 120 N R Tattoo is sounded in the evening as a signal to make down bunks and prepare to retire. Aboard ship, Tattoo is a signal for silence about the decks. To The Color X 132 TO THE COLOR is a bugle call to render honors to the nation.  It is used when no band is available to render honors, or in ceremonies requiring honors to the nation more than once.  TO THE COLOR commands all the same courtesies as the National Anthem. The Navy refers to this call as "Morning Colors" and was followed by the "carry on" signal on most Naval bases. While the vast majority of tunes are written in proper staff notation, some tunes are written in what I've termed "bugle clef".  I find it easiest to quickly write out a tune using a single staff line as such:

Thanks to the many people who have contributed toward this work, especially to fellow bugler Mr. Ian Stares for graciously providing my first large "batch" of tunes for this site.  I am also grateful to Mr. Ken Barlow of Excelsior Brigade Fife & Drum Corps for his supply of the Nevins manual. My thanks go Dave Poulin for the 1825 de Sans manuscript and the 1769 Terada manual. I also want to mention Bugles Across America and thank the many men and women of that organization who sound Taps in honor of our nations fallen heroes.  If you are interested in learning how to play Taps on the bugle, please see their website.  For instructions on how to properly sound Taps, please see Jari Villenueva's "Taps Performance Guidelines" (PDF).  I've notated the sources of many of the files in the "Notes" column above.
